Coolgardie Safe

Before refrigerators, there was the Coolgardie safe, used in keeping food cool. Water was contained in the upper tank and the flannel rags were hung over the sides. The water then siphoned its way over the sides and ran down the hessian, creating a cooling effect for the produce inside.

See the Coolgardie safe and other interesting artifacts at the Hall’s Cottage, one of the oldest buildings in Mandurah, built using limestone almost 200 years ago. We’re open to the public on Sundays, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Hall’s Cottage is also available for events bookings and school excursions. Email us at info@mandurahhistorical.com.au for more information.
